Brännland iscider 2021, first Swedish wine at the Nobel Banquet since 1901 inception

After a two year hiatus as a result of the covid pandemic tonight marks the return of the Nobel Banquet in Stockholm city hall. This year Brännland Iscider has been bestowed the honour of delivering the wine for the dessert served to the 1300 guests. This is the first time a Swedish wine has been served in the 121 year history of the banquet.

“One of the goals I set myself when I started making ice cider in 2010 was that Brännland Iscider would be served at the Nobel banquet. As we move into our 10th anniversary vintage we are there.” says Andreas Sundgren, founder of Brännland Iscider.

Historically, Nobel banquet wines have had their origins in traditional wine countries and districts with an emphasis on France and Italy. To choose a Swedish wine with this years banquet dessert in competition with grape wine producers established since generations is clear confirmation of Brännland Isciders quality and takes Swedish wine to a new level in terms of recognition.

Ice cider, originally cidre de glace, originates in Quebec, Canada. It is a sweet icewine produced with apple juice at a sugar level of at least 30° brix, roughly the equivalent of 300 grams of sugar per liter. The sugar concentration must be achieved using natural cold, in the case of Brännland Iscider, the winter cold of its northern home county of Västerbotten.

“Nordic cuisine is renowned the world over for its quality and unique expression but when it comes to wine we haven’t yet achieved the same status. Our goal from the start has been to change that. With listings globally in three star restaurants and the Nobel banquet we are redrawing the map of the Swedish wine.” says Andreas Sundgren.
